I wrote this post for a friend, I'm sharing it here for anybody it might help. I got asked multiple times how I download cracked music software so I figured it'd be easier to write it down once. It's meant for people with very low technical skills who just want to start torrenting software without major risks, and it includes a bunch of safety tips that are already known in this community. If you have feedback, let me know and I'll update the post.

I had this idea, and it's probably dumb, but hear me out and let me know what you think. I really like movies. Streaming services are currently the best legal option to watch movies afaik, but often they don't have that specific and maybe also old movie I want to watch - even with 3 different streaming services. Then I could rent it, but paying like 8 bucks every time I want to watch a movie is too much. If I could buy and download a free (free as in no drm or other bullshit shenanigans) digital copy of a movie for a reasonable price I would be all over that shit. But as we all know the greedy capitalists can't keep milking the same old cashcows if the users have a permanent copy that they can potentially also distribute so that won't happen any time soon. So my idea was what is we as a public group (movie enthusiasts) joined and made a company funded by something like gofundme or similar. The sole purpose of the company would be to buy rights to movies and hosting digital copies free to download for anyone. Wouldn't that be something. Legal digital movies by the public for the public.

For the third week both Marvel and DC comics are released in SD quality, with no true HD resolution is sight (upscaling is meh). This has happened before, but never for this long. Because it's both Marvel and DC it's unlikely it has something to do with their DRM. Also, there appears to be a new releaser "Li'l-Empire". Does anyone know what's up?

I have a digital subscription to a textbook, but it's super annoying to have to use the website to access the book. I'd like to scrape the ebook and dump the contents into a pdf. I have downloaded proprietary pdfs from websites before using downloader browser plugins and predictable urls, but this site is pretty locked down, with randomly generated url tokens and a combination of xml and image data. Has anyone managed to scrape a digital textbook like this? Any ideas where I should begin?

I've been sailing the browser seas for a decade and remember ace stream and some other VLC like streams where you would just plug the URL in and get INCREDIBLE quality streams full HD 60fps it was heaven ... now all the streams I get are low bitrate 30 fps 720 at very best. Can anyone point me back in the right direction I'm sick of these crappy sites

How to play pirated steam vr games with Pico 4? I have downloaded some games and when I run the games don't recognize pico Controller and don't show in full immersion screen. Games show in desktop window and no option to make full screen. How to fix this?

My girlfriend got an Abmahnung from Frommer Legal yesterday. Unfortunately her name is on the internet account and she is very law abiding and worried by it. I'm Canadian and the most I've ever gotten has been a threatening letter from an ISP in Canada. Obviously, I didn't know torrenting was so persecuted in Germany or else I would have been more vigilant with a VPN. Anyway , the Abmahnung is representing Warner Brothers and wants me to pay 1000€ for seeding 2 episodes of an HBO show. I contacted one of the many defense firms that specialize against these lawsuits but their fee is 30% of what I save of the "fine". So the combined minimum(fine and lawyer fee) I could possibly pay with them is 300€. My girlfriend has proof that she wasn't home that day (a hostel booking from Berlin) but even so the whole thing (Frommel and the defense firms) seems like the epitome of lawful evil to me and I'd rather not support it. They are both just lawyers preying on people foolish enough to not use VPNs with scare tactics. We are planning to move in 6 months anyway (elsewhere in Germany). I did read that these firms generally do (or at least sometimes) sue you in court if you ignore the warnings. I read a couple anecdotes from people that got sued just before 3 years ran out after the first Abmahnung. Can they even sue us if they don't have our new address? What should I do? Suck it up and pay the defense firm or ignore it? Edit: I decided to pay a defense firm and chose https://www.advocado.de/ because their fee €150 was cheaper than the others. If it was in my name, I would have just waited to see if they ever even try to take me to court, but my girlfriend just wanted it gone. I'll provide an update if there is one, but I expect I'll never hear from them again, as now they are communicating directly with advocado.

I currently have Plex and Radarr. I only ever got 1080p content because that’s all my tv would do. Finally getting a nice new tv and would like to get a few 4K hdr movies to watch. Should I be looking for Bluray2160, Remux, or disk and what will Plex play?

In the past, most software I used was paid and proprietary and would have some sort of limitation that I would try to get around by any means possible. Sometimes that would be resetting the clock on my computer, disabling the internet, and other times downloading a patch. But in the past few years I've stopped using those things and have focused only on free and open source software (FOSS) to fulfill my needs. I hardly have to worry about privacy problems or trying to lock down a program that calls home. I might be missing out on some things that commercial software delivers, but I'm hardly aware of what they are anymore. It seems like the trend is for commercial software providers to migrate toward online or service models that have the company doing all the computing. I'm opposed to that, since they can take away your service at any time. What do you do?
