F-Droid

F-Droid is an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform. The client makes it easy to browse, install, and keep track of updates on your device. IzzyOnDroid is an F-Droid style repository for Android apps, provided by IzzyOnDroid. Applications in this repository are official binaries built by the original application developers, taken from their resp. repositories (mostly Github).

LemDro.id is the instance for all things Android within the threadiverse (Lemmy, Mbin, PieFed and now even NodeBB) and so it’s only right that F-Droid finds itself a host on Lemdroid.

The amazing team over at Lemdroid were gracious enough to host the F-Droid community. This opens F-Droid discussions to users whose home instance block ML and more users having easier access to content is never a bad thing.

There’s a clear division. You’re trying to micromanage and for what. Let communities exist. People that want to go to the biggest community can. There’s been plenty of occasions where I’ve seen more discussions in smaller communities.

for what.

To make the platform grow, so that at some point very popular topics like Android, Football or Lego do not rely on a single person for activity.

The main criticism potential new joiners have towards Lemmy is that it’s confusing, because communities exist every twice ([email protected] vs [email protected] ) , causing https://lawsofux.com/choice-overload/

Letting communities exist doesn’t work when the main competitor is Reddit that has been established for 15 years. Small communities start, the main poster shouts into the void for a while, then stops posting and leaves the platform. That’s the whole motivation behind [email protected]

When Reddit started, there were no subreddits. There was a single feed, and everything was there. Then, when there was enough activity, general subreddits started.

You call it micromanaging, but there needs to be some consolidation at some point for the platform to be sustainable.

People that want to go to the biggest community can.

They can’t, in this case, because [email protected] rules prevents support questions to be asked.

I meant that people can go to another instance. Lemdroid is fine as is. And for the record, you’re not attempting to consolidate, you’re attempting to artificially fluff.

I meant that people can go to another instance.

I’m surprised, as I know you’re against centralization of large instances, but this would mean to basically tell people to go to Lemmy.world to have a general Android community.

And for the record, you’re not attempting to consolidate, you’re attempting to artificially fluff.

Not sure what you mean. We both post on [email protected]. Is using a general football community “artificially fluffing”, compared to using !premierleague@instance, !seriea@instance, !bundesliga@instance ?

My stance is that using a general football community is good based on the amount of regular posters. I think it should be the same for Android.

If people don’t like the way Lemdroid is run, LW is there or any other instance is there and available.

I don’t post in football to create content or make it look busy, I post there because I love football.

If people don’t like the way Lemdroid is run, LW is there or any other instance is there and available.

Then LW will keep being the centralized instance with the vast majority of communities.

I don’t post in football to create content or make it look busy, I post there because I love football.

That doesn’t answer the question: what is an adequate level of detail for an Android community?

People probably love Android too, but don’t want to post to a community where there are 7 post in a month, and with 87 monthly active users compared to [email protected] which has 1590 MAU ([email protected] has 3k, but we already know questions aren’t allowed there)

So it’s Lemdroid’s responsibility to pander?

Says who? If people want to post to LW or anywhere else, they will. I don’t post to [email protected] because I don’t like the moderation policy, none of the other self hosted communities across Lemmy are as active. Despite that, I still don’t post. Because the community isn’t a good fit for me.

I asked @[email protected] to move @[email protected] to another instance and he didn’t wanna. Despite my strong feelings about decentralisation, I stuck there because community is more important.

I like the admin team and the community of Lemdroid. Whether they’re tiny or there’s more popular elsewhere. I’m not chasing numbers of trying to act like ActivityPub Jesus, first and foremost is cultivating my good time without letting my ego get in the way.

They were created as an alternative to LW (https://lemmy.world/post/2318814 - ironically, I saw one of your alts then banned, seems like the LW mods didn’t appreciate your posts), so in a sense, yes? But I’ll probably just open a post on [email protected] to see what people over there think.

Says who?

All comments you see mentioning “every time I look for a community on Lemmy to ask a question, it’s a ghost town”.

[email protected]

[email protected]

You care about defederation and moderation policies. Most users just go for the community with the higher number of subs / MAU. This is the main reason why [email protected] and [email protected] are still the largest communities by far while [email protected] and [email protected] exist.

In a way, you show it yourself with the second. You have to go to [email protected] because it’s the only active community. If there was a similarly active gunners community elsewhere, wouldn’t you post and comment there instead?

If we want decentralization, the non-LW/ml communities have to be better, otherwise network effect just brings people there naturally.

If you prefer not to interfere with that, that’s okay, but I’m not sure why criticizing people who try to (and it’s not only me, you see other people like @[email protected] doing a great job consolidating inactive communities: https://lemmy.zip/post/40774008) helps with decentralization.

I like the admin team and the community of Lemdroid.

But we’re both part of that community. Me suggesting something to you isn’t something that happens in a vacuum, it’s two regular poster of the community/instance who discuss where posts are made.

I’m not chasing numbers of trying to act like ActivityPub Jesus, first and foremost is cultivating my good time without letting my ego get in the way.

The first prerequisite to have a good time is to have people to interact with. This has been know for a while: https://lemmy.zip/post/14347368

Huh? What alt? Banned where?

But I’ll probably just open a post on [email protected] to see what people over there think.

And this is what I’m talking about when I talk about ego. The Ask Android community is there to enable people to ask questions and find answers, you don’t post there and yet you want to close it for your own vanity.

All comments you see mentioning “every time I look for a community on Lemmy to ask a question, it’s a ghost town”.

So let it be a ghost town. Again, there’s many good communities that aren’t the biggest on Lemmy and they’re a success. What makes them a success, the fact that people go back and enjoy them.

Most users just go for the community with the higher number of subs / MAU.

Those are literally all of the users I’m trying to avoid. My great Lemmy experience relies on me not having to come across those people.

This is the main reason why [email protected] and [email protected] are still the largest communities by far while [email protected] and [email protected] exist.

It’s just called traction. There was never a compelling reason to move. It’s not like football which got locked so everyone was forced to move.

If we want decentralization, the non-LW/ml communities have to be better, otherwise network effect just brings people there naturally.

I want Lemmy. I don’t want Blaze’s Lemmy or my Lemmy, I just wanna Lemmy. Not everything needs you or my fingerprints on it.

If you prefer not to interfere with that, that’s okay, but I’m not sure why criticizing people who try to (and it’s not only me, you see other people like @[email protected] doing a great job consolidating inactive communities: https://lemmy.zip/post/40774008) helps with decentralization.

Because this isn’t coming from a good place.

If you were trying to consolidate android@lw and android@lemdroid and android@whatever I could see where you’re coming from, but you’re literally just being a community Nazi. I can’t support that.

But we’re both part of that community. Me suggesting something to you isn’t something that happens in a vacuum, it’s two regular poster of the community/instance who discuss where posts are made.

The posts are fine where they are. If I want to discuss features/news I go to android, if I have a question, I go to askandroid

The first prerequisite to have a good time is to have people to interact with.

The prerequisite is having some integrity.

Rules

The rules for behavior are a straight carry over of Mastodon.World’s rules. You can click the link but we’ve reposted them here in brief, as a guideline. We will continue to use the Mastodon.World rules as the master list. Over all, be nice to each other and remember this isn’t a community built around debate. For the rules about formatting your posts, scroll down to number 2.

1. Follow the rules of Mastodon.world, which can be found here.

A. Provide an inclusive and supportive environment. This means if it isn’t rulebreaking and we can’t be supportive to them then we probably shouldn’t engage.

B. No illegal content.

C. Use content warnings where appropriate. This means mark your submissions NSFW if need be.

D. No uncivil behavior. This includes, but is not limited to: Name Calling; Bullying; Trolling; Disruptive Commenting; or Personal Criticisms.

E. No Harrassment. As an example in relation to Transgender people this includes, deadnaming, misgendering, and promotion of conversion therapy. Similarly Misogyny, Misandry, and Racism are also banned here.

2. Include a community or instance title and description in your post title. - A following example of this would be New Communities - A place to post new communities or instances all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

3. Follow the formatting. - The formatting as included below is important for people getting universal links across Lemmy as easily as possible.

Formatting

Please include this following format in your post:

[link text](/c/[email protected])

This provides a link that should work across instances, but in some cases it won’t

You should also include either:

[email protected]

or instance.com/c/community

FAQ:

Q: Why do I get a 404?

A: At least one user in an instance needs to search for a community before it gets fetched. Searching for the community will bring it into the instance and it will fetch a few of the most recent posts without comments. If a user is subscribed to a community, then all of the future posts and interactions are now in-sync.

Q: When I try to create a post, the circle just spins forever. Why is that?

A: This is a current known issue with large communities. Sometimes it does get posted, but just continues spinning, but sometimes it doesn’t get posted and continues spinning. If it doesn’t actually get posted, the best thing to do is try later. However, only some people seem to be having this problem at the moment.
