The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

We’re the generation that used forums all over the internet, Digg, and then reddit before it was cool. Now that reddit is going nuclear, we’re all looking for our new home because we yearn for the internet we all grew up with as it slowly erodes away thanks to millionaires/billionaires ruining all that is good to make a buck.

Hell, we used forums even before the Internet (BBS’ anyone)?

Every once in a long while I even miss CompuServe.

I mostly enjoyed the new take on a forum concept because the way it organized replies on new topics and because of the massive community. Videos, pics, and memes were okay, but it’s the community comments that I mostly found valuable.
