If you’re worrying about wasted room, you can definitely play around some more to find ways to fit.

Personally I just skip all that and either hang them from hooks, or throw them into a tall, upright container (like a vase or can put something). I’ve got all my oddly shaped utensils like that, and I’ve got this old vase thing that stores my most common utensils, within reach of my stove. The access matters more than the storage.

Best thing I ever did was hang peg board. Two actually, one for pans (pots still live in the cabinet), and another for the most used utensils. I love having all my measuring spoons and cups hanging next to the cutting board.

But… But the dust

Not as big of an issue as you’d think if you use your kitchen regularly. The bigger issue that most people don’t consider is oil residue from cooking, ends up creating a slight sticky film on hanging utensils if they aren’t used or washed every couple of weeks.
