The first part is the county or city - I’m in Nottinghamshire which is NG, then there is normally a numerical value which denotes an area, so NG2 is Nottingham - West Bridgford. You also get NG1 (city centre) and NG3-dunno what (other areas). Then the final three digits are the street or section of the street, so 5FJ for example. Not fully sure how they determine the final three digits. So an example full postcode would be NG2 5FJ and you would know immediately that was a street in Nottingham(NG) West Bridgford (2)

That’s not to say everyone in the UK knows every first part of the post code off by heart mind. Same way that most US residents likely couldn’t tell you where a random zip code was without looking it up - you get used to the ones in your local area but not generally any outside that unless you spend some time elsewhere enough to warrant it.
