I’m looking for a Todoist alternative due to their limit on projects. I have a very specific set of requirements though:
I’ve tried so far:
Nice to haves - MindMap integration
Any suggesstions are very much appreciated. Thank you. :)
!nostupidquestions is a community space dedicated to being helpful and answering each others’ questions on various topics.
The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:
All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.
Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.
Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.
That’s it.
Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.
Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.
On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it’s in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.
If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.
If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.
Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

As you said, that’s a pretty specific list of requirements.
Forgive me for saying so but it sounds like you just want todoist without the pay wall.
Another problem you’re up against is that you want a free service but you keep running into pay walls (ticktick & any.do). This is their business model - basic usage free but the usage you actually want is non-free. Sadly the conclusion is, if you actually found what you wanted for free it would be due to a company’s failure to structure their pricing model correctly.
You could of course look at open source or self hosted software. This software is actually “free” in that you can obtain the software free of charge and use it as you wish without limitation. The problem here is that in many cases you need to configure and host it yourself, which… may be complex or even out of reach depending on your existing knowledge. There’s a list of self hosted task management apps here.
I think it’s also important to acknowledge that everyone get’s frustrated with their task manager not being quite right. I use Asana for my small team. It’s expensive. I hate it. It’s sadly the best I’ve found.
Firstly thank you for your lovely reply! I’ve gotten so jaded by reddits arsiness I was pretty worried I’d just get down voted and/or insulted.
Besides that - yes! You make a very good point! I do basically want the “moon on a stick” as some would say! On the interim I realised I can combine todoist projects into a few to level ones and just trash them with what we’re their subprojects. So that’s a partial workaround I’ve found…
Thank you for the open source suggestions! Never occurred to me to look into that which is crazy because I’m used Redmine project manager and Gitlab self hosted before but never thought of a to-do list!! And I’m a web developer who’s practiced web Frameworks using to-do list apps! Ha!
Now, since posting I’ve been using Taskade today on my phone and I’ve been blown away, seriously!!
The sheer load of features and it’s killer AI additions along with a mass of project templates that literally help you plan how you’ll complete your to-do list is incredible!
Really been impressed!! It’s a bit early to say but may have my new favourite.
Anyway I need to get home but I’ll update this comment and my post with my findings once I do. Plus I’ll have a look and report back on any good self hosting ones I find.
Thanks again. 👍
Great answer

I’m pretty happy with TickTick premium. It checks all your boxes and 30$ p.a. is reasonable imho.
https://github.com/johannesjo/super-productivity but I don’t think it checks all your boxes.
