It feels like someone shared a photo, others felt inspired to share, and it snowballed since then

My aunt when she was a kid named her black cat Nothing.
So when her dad, who didn’t like cats in the house, asked what that sound was from her room she would say ’oh that was nothing’.
This story gets trotted out every holiday.
