They had to recount votes to make sure the votes are counted correctly and the situation even went to the Supreme Court, the highest court in the US. The court ruled in favor of Bush in a 5-4 decision, the judges who sided with him are appointed by former presidents of his party, leading to many opponents of Bush to accusing the Supreme Court of being biased and corrupt. The joke here is that Bush actually send a time traveller to mess with the election process.
