Noob question about newly released movies…
Okay so for context: I've never really downloaded movies right after release, the movies that I've downloaded were all released at least few months before the time of download, so I don't know how movies releases work. So when a movie is released, how long does it take for there to be a high-quality pirated version of it? I can't seem to find the movie on an online platform even if I were to pay for it. Are movies exclusive to an actual theater when they first get released? Right now I'm searching for that movie that was just released and all I find is HDCAMs. Does this mean that someone just secretly recorded it in a theater? Oh btw, the movie I'm talking about is about a scientist that was involved in (at the time) a secret government weapons program during WW2. The movie was released very recently. (Hey, I didn't mentioned the name of the movie, I hope I'm not breaking the rules 😉)

20 years is old I guess. God damn Gen-Alpha

Marx was too idealistic. He didn’t account for what happens when you put people into power of this “dicatorship of the proletariat”. Most people who get into power are not going to willingly give up power. You’ll end up with self-proclaimed communist countries that are either stuck in this transition phase indefinitely, or end up abandoning it in favor of state capitalism.

Random door-to-door sales person: knocks on door

Jesus is just trying to help you get to heaven faster

lemmygrad.com is just a redirect to exploding-heads.com which is just another extremist instance at the other end of the spectrem.

Chrome is for those stupid banking websites that doesn’t work with Firefox

You tap the “side bar” text to expand it and you have a subscribe button.

Legend has it that someone’s phone is still “about to die” to this day

Haha Find My Network goes [Turned Off]

Oh no, wanna-be dictator wants to own the world? 😟 What shall we do?

How does domain names work?
Who determines who owns a domain name? International organization? Do unrecognized countries also get their own top-level domain? If someone or some organization wanted to register a website for highly illegal activities (terrorism, crime organizations, etc) who has the authority to shut them down? Does one government has the authority, or does it require a majority of the countries? What if, say, North Korea hosted a website advocating terrorism? Who can take that down?

Lol they could’ve just spend $10 from the donations they receive to secure an actual .com domain

I don’t even know what my password is, it’s like 40+ characters long

Edit: because I use a password manager

I learned enough about Rosemary Kennedy, no thanks. 🤮

Dude wtf is that profile picture/banner? Thanks, I hate it!

Governments just love doing stuff whenever they can, because what are you gonna do? This is a country under a military junta, there is no legal process to get back the domain.

lemmy.fmhy.ml is pirate friendly, lemmy.ml is not. Maybe the Mali government suddenly decided they don’t like piracy because… reasons? Maybe the Somalian pirates pissed them off???

Democracies and Republics are bad because Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is proof that it’s bad.

Reject Democracy! Back to Monarchy!

If your instance goes down, you lose all you posts. vlemmy.net was an instance and they just vanished recently. lemmy.fmhy.ml just disappeared yesterday, I couldn’t find much info besides a post vaguely mentioning that their domain name got seized by the Mali government (idk why). Besides being shut down, also due to federation issues. beehaw.org has defederated from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, meaning you can’t really interact with each other for the most part. Some instances like lemmygrad.ml and exploding-heads.com are disliked by many instance owners due to politics and got defederated so they are sorta on their own island.

Edit: Well… techically, your posts aren’t lost, you can still find them in other instances. But your images are gone since images do not get federated (unless someone made an archive) and you lost the account and any direct messages, and you have to manually check if you want to see any comments to a post that you posted before it got shut down. Just a huge inconvenience.

What stops states from just ignoring popular votes for the appointment of electoral college electors? [USA]
I mean, a state that is forseeing a election which an opponent party will likely win, could just pass a law *before* the election that says "The state legislature shall have the sole authority of appointing electors to the electoral college for elections of president and vice president" and if they have an already gerrymandered state legislature, they could cling to power with like 40%, or maybe even less, of the votes and have a trifecta in the state, electoral votes are practically permanently voting for the party. They could even change how governors are selected by making them to also be appointed by legislature, further solidifying their power. Why haven't some states just gone full authoritarian? I mean, the federal government couldn't do anything about such states if this were to happen, due to federalism.

Noooo, you can’t just steal MY Declaration of Lemmy Independence that I stole downloaded. Hello, Lemmy Police? This fucking Lemming just stole MY document!

uBlock Origin doesn’t do anything in this case, but it’s more of a general statement of my browsing setup

What exactly is the problem with browser. Do people just have a high expectation of a platform, or am I just too used to the browser experience?

Someone: Photographs pages of a book in a book store

OP: “Hello Police? Someone is stealing a book!”

I always thought apt and apt-get is the same thing so why type more when you can less?

But then again, I’m a linux noob that only uses distros like Ubuntu.

I also like the software center thing in Ubuntu because of GUI and… um… why do I see a bunch of people with pitchforks?

Were you in russia before or after… um you know…

Tbh I don’t trust any so-called “antivirus” these days. It’s all a lie.

Are those “Fuck Cars” communities being serious?
I mean, I honestly don't understand why anyone made an entire community with the focus of hating cars. I made one comment about why trains cannot replace cars and oh man the response I get from angry car haters is just so... bewildering. Edit: I don't mean to offend anyone. I respect your right to hold those beliefs.

Are there any cross platform peer-to-peer social networks that people actually use?
Not federated ones, but peer-to-peer ones. Sorry if this isn't the right community to ask, but I couldn't find a better one that fits. I'm just fascinated by the idea of p2p networks, but so far, I haven't found one with actual people using.

How do we know that everyone on the internet isn’t just a bot?
I mean, there might be a secret AI technology that is so advanced to the point that it can mimic a real human, make posts and comments that looks like its written by a human and even intentionally doing speling mistakes to simulate human errors. How do we know that such AI hasn't already infiltrated the internet and everything that you see is posted by this AI? If such AI actually exists, it's probably so advanced that it almost never fails barring rare situations where there is an unexpected errrrrrrrrrorrrrrrrrrrr............. [Error: The program "Human_Simulation_AI" is unresponsive]

A malicious law enformement officer or a criminal can exploit copyright laws to prevent criminal activities to be posted on mainstream platforms. Read the article for a real life example. No matter your stance on copyright laws, I think we can all agree there needs to be an exemption to copyright laws where if a video or audio recording contains copyrighted material but also contains unrelated content (like police violence or other criminal activity), then that should be exempt from copyright laws. Beside, who wants to listen to music that also has a cop screeching in the background, therefore, this wouldn't affect music subscriptions services in any way. Even with such law, I don't have hopes of youtube changing their policies. I'm honestly sad for the future.

When a Flight Data Recorder/Cockpit Voice Recorder is found, they are often taken on a plane and flown to an investigation headquarters. But what if the plane carrying those black boxes crash?
Example: Lemmy Federated Airlines Flight 360 crashes with no survivors. Now the Lemmy Federation Air Crash Investigation Bureau finds the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit voice recorder, and they take those boxes aboard Lemmy Investigation Bureau Airfleet Flight 180 back to the investigation headquarters for analysis. This flight also crashes with no survivors. What happens now? Will the black boxes of Flight 360 still be readable? Also, what were the odds of this scenario happening? Sorry I couldn't sleep and had to get this question out of my head.

So I wanna download a car…
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/467636 > Lets say in 10 years, 3D printing technology become so advanced, almost anything can be perfectly replicated. So I find some leaked car 3d file, I download it, I print the car. What current laws would I be violating? Civil or criminal? And what future laws can you anticipate?

Why is refusal to pay bills or rent considered a civil matter, while refusal to pay a restautant bill considered criminal? What’s the difference?
Both utility bills and restaurant bills are demands to satisfy a debt after the service have been rendered. And in cases of rental properties, it's refusal to pay even before the service (the legal right to reside in the property) is rendered, since most leases require paying on the first of the month. Why shouldn't they all just be considered either all civil or all criminal. I don't understand the inconsistency in legislation. Country: United States of America

Why is the most popular computer os closed source while the most popular mobile os is open source?
I don't understand why Google didn't just made Android closed source. They would've made custom roms impossible and therefore more able to control and spy on it's users. Why did Google made Android open source, while Microsoft's Windows is still closed source to this day?
