I feel bad that many people working hard do not earn enough money, for various meanings of “enough”.

Both are independently true statements.

I update them on my condition. Given the context, they’re likely asking whether anything is going on with me that I believe they ought to know about.

It’s not what you have to hide, it’s how they want to use what they can see. They can weaponize anything and the only reason you don’t care yet is that they haven’t made you a target yet.

Everyone occasionally notices that they’d prefer a comfortable lie over a difficult truth. You need to choose which you value more: truth or comfort. It’s not an easy question.
