I feel your arguments apply to the fediverse as well?
On the fediverse i only have to adapt to one ui, and create one account in order to interact with other instances. The same doesn’t apply to gitlab instances/sr.ht/codeberg/sourceforge etc.
huge number of projects using gitlab
still nowhere near as many as on github, and how many of those are on the official gitlab instance rather than on everyone’s selfhosted one?
I can also run my own gitlab
i don’t get what benefit hosting your own git brings to be honest
Because why not github? I’ve yet to see an actual reason other than people’s hatred for microsoft to be honest.
I know this is gonna be a hot take here, but having to sign up to a million different instances of git just kills collaboration if anything, as well as making discovery of projects harder. Github’s already got a massive userbase, just go with github like everyone else.
Yeah, someone else the other day also said that the mastodon founder out of all people, was bribed by meta, lmao. And he followed up by saying that because we can’t prove it, it must be true. You could prove anything, even that lizard men exist, with that attitude. Just another day in any social media, i suppose.
The admins were probably paid off
again, please stop with the baseless claims, if you’re going to make such a drastic claim against mastodon, lemmy.world, etc being bribed by meta, provide a source, else just stop spreading these claims.
There are people actively defending being federated with Zuck bullshit and they’re likely dumb shills or bots too.
I left Reddit specifically to get away from this shit, yet here we are
lol… so someone makes a decision which doesn’t align with your opinion, and you call them “dumb shills” or “bots”, honestly please go back to reddit, we don’t need this toxicity here. If you don’t like lemmy.world, switch instances, rather than trying to force your opinion on everyone else, thats the beauty of federation, choose an instance which aligns with your ideologies.
Gmail blocks a ton of smaller email services for generating spam / scams / malicious activity, just because a protocol is open doesn’t mean it has to tolerate problematic content.
im honestly surprised you’re using kbin or any federated service with that take lol, how could you simultaneously be for federation but also against it?
Gmail at least pushes smaller mail servers into spam, which isn’t even the worst thing when compared to outlook which just straight up blackholes email if it isn’t coming from one of the major email corporations nowadays. Email was meant to be federated, not to be monopolised by microsoft, google or yahoo…
The issue i have is that it’s entirely possible to de-federate client side in mastodon, so that only you personally don’t see content from meta, yet despite this there’s mastodon instances de-federating server side and making that decision for all users, regardless of what they wanted, its just the instance owners opinion/ideologies that are respected.
I think it should be the user who decides, rather than having it decided for them. Also whilst you personally may not like the change, im sure there’s people who would, or people who want an excuse to actually be able to ditch meta’s instance and come to kbin, mastodon or lemmy, but we’re making that really hard for them by forcing them into meta’s instance due to our de-federation.
Defederating client side also appears to be somewhat possible in kbin, but I think stuff like comments will still show regardless, so in that case it’s more understandable.
Right, so because you personally don’t want to communicate with their users, means everyone has to abide by your opinion, because you don’t want to spend the 3 seconds to de-federate for yourself only. In order to not inconvenience you, everyone must be de-federated from meta, to save you those 3 seconds, even if some people wanted to communicate with meta, i suppose its too bad for them, they’re not important enough, only you are my lord and saviour /u/Monkeyhog.
Seriously?!
I don’t doubt it, the fediverse will absolutely self implode if this insanity continues, you have instances de-federating with meta, you have instances de-federating with instances which chose not to de-federate with meta, its putting massive walls between content/and fediverse users.
If things continue as is, some people will have no choice but to use meta’s official instance and applications rather than a mastodon/kbin/etc instance, as they would’ve blocked meta. I’m sure that’s not what everyone wants.
Its the opposite, if instances federate with meta, you can communicate with meta users without sacrificing privacy as you’d be using the lemmy instance of choice to do so, which sits between you and meta. Defederating is what forces people to install the invasive meta applications as they’re left with no other choice…
The UX is completely horrid.
well this issue comes down to the clients you pick for it, Fluffychat for an android/ios client and cinny for a web client are both great.
Note that cinny doesn’t support calling yet though, so you’d need to pick one of the many other clients in order to have that feature, or just use jitsi over the web.
+1 for scoop, always use it when I’m on windows.
