There are dozens of us! Dozens!
Came here right after Joey stopped working. Gave official app one good spin before deleting: virtually unusable.
I’m one of those! Literally just joined for my first comment. :)
Doing course correction in fixing social media is a long game. It’ll take a while, and there’ll be turbulence, but this is a great start
This is amazing
and I mean, why not?
fuck reddit, and any corporation that takes advantages of its users like reddit.
We are the ones who give you value, not vica versa. Their IPO depends on how many users they have. Not on the capabilities of your app. And they treated it vica versa.
From then I just made my parade for pro-privacy and for pro-anticorp that takes advantage of its users, deleted my META account thus my Instagram, Messenger etc. My Discord. I dont care anymore. Even if I dont have now I will find someday other options. Better or not, they are options. And Lemmy seems a very good one, even better I would say, just not as user friendly - yet. (Not that reddit’s app was good but we all knew that we had to use apollo/boost anyway)
im waiting for discord to explode ngl
It’s literally owned at large (undisclosed as a private company it is) part by Tencent , by one of the most major famous companies/puppets of CCP/Communist Chinese Party.
China is known for abolishing anybody who disobeys their rules and anybody who accuses them of not being more “Free” or for criticizing them. (Egh egh … Jack Ma). Obviously anybody who opposes their demands ceases to exist. Anything they can’t control, they’re banning it. It’s a known fact, not a tinfoil one. With dozens of examples:
Anyway. We all know how China doesn’t like Criticism. This is just a list for the bots that will come down to accuse me of being tinfoil hatted.
And discord is literally a platform with NO-TEXT-ENCRYPTION. So, OBVIOUSLY, YEAH, they know everything you write there. Literally. And your profile name, and your history, your servers, chat logs, what games you like more if you connected your steam, what music you listen to if you connected your spotify etc.
Discord should be banned from the whole universe. Not just explode.
that’s scary…
i wish i knew this sooner, i hope i can manage to stop using that platform as soon as possible.
I have high hopes for Lemmy, but I don’t think that having a lot of users is going to be a super positive thing in the long term. It’d be great if it could feel like younger Reddit for longer than younger Reddit did, you know? Stay at least a little under the radar.
What’s a number you’re comfortable with?
I was expecting someone to say either the numbers 42 or 69.
this really is reddit
No, THIS! IS! SPARTA!

Reddit was and is impossibly easy to use. You visit the site and start scrolling. If and when you decide you want to participate you create and account and start doing so.
The barrier to entry on Lemmy is much higher. This will keep out many of the types of low effort users that would eventually turn this into reddit.
Maybe someday the fediverse will be as obvious to everyone as any other part of the internet but it’s definitely not right now and it will be awhile before it is.
It definitely took me a bit to wrap my head around the fediverse, but the presence of a “main” site (in this case, Lemmy.world, or in Mastodon’s Mastodon.social) has made it pretty easy for me. I hate that crypto nerds took “web3.0” because I think, in most ways, the true inter-operability of social networks is the next “web2.0”-tier step that the internet can take.
Yeah I very much agree.
It’s inevitable with things on the internet. If Lemmy is successful, it will become like reddit too.
Yes and no…I am on lemmy.nz and browsing by local / subscribed eliminates all of the memes and bullshit.
I do browse by all every now and then…but it is not my preferred setting.
Somewhat but reddit drew a lot of people in with celebrities. The people attracted to celebrities and image heavy content will be more drawn to Threads instead of Lemmy. At least imho
You find Tildes image heavy compared to Lemmy? I have the opposite experience. Maybe I’m subscribed to some image heavy communities here?
Not sure why I said it that way, all I really meant was Instagram users
I think because of federation, even if lemmy blows up, smaller instances and communities will be able to exist still. Over on Mastodon, the big instances have grown up quite a bit, but there is also many thriving smaller communities that either aren’t federated with the big instances, or federated very selectively to curate the community they want.
I’m just looking forward to the meme subreddits becoming less outdated. Feels like 2017 in here
I actually appreciate the nostalgia
In looking for a replacement for Reddit, I came across this. I’m hopefully optimistic. The last straw for me in a long list of issues that I have with Reddit came yesterday. Lemmy has a long way to go, but I’m moving away from Reddit and will become active here.
What happened yesterday?
Perma banned from r/Libertarian and a 3 day site suspension for saying “The cop would have had to shoot me too after that. Gun or no gun, I would have beat him within an inch of his life until I succumb to my wounds. My dogs are part of my family.” In response to a posted video of an Ohio LEO shooting and killing a Golden Retriever in front of her owner, while smiling and wagging its tail. Absolutely horrific watch.
ETA: I still can’t get the images from this video out of my head. If you love animals, do not watch it, it will only anger you and upset you for days. I meant what I said and to be banned by a Libertarian sub for saying it was a kick in the balls.
Oh, the irony
And that’s why it was the nail in the coffin.
“I dunno this seems pretty intense for – wait, protecting your family? Your pets?! They did what to that dog?! Nevermind then, this isn’t intense enough.”
My mental processing of your comment as I read more and more
Yeah, it does seem intense without context. What’s worse is that you’re just reading a description, whereas they (the mods) saw the video.
It makes total sense to me after reading the whole comment. I’d have the same reaction
Nice achievement! Needless to say, the user base needs to grow further to compete with other social media
I think it would be great if we have numbers that are increasing slow and steadily, giving this whole ecosystem time to work out the kinks. While I dream of one day everyone being a part of the fediverse, I’m getting a good count and quality of discussions right now.
The nice thing is we aren’t really “competing” so to speak. I definitely want lemmy to grow, but the community can be a .0001% chunk of the internet and I would be totally happy as long as it were a kind, useful, and fun chunk
Yay! My first post! Still figuring things out such as logging in, communities, etc. A bit different from the old world, but the browser is very Apollo-like - God bless everyone for this! MOAR!!! More people, more posts, more POWER muahahahahahaha! Go Lemmy! Go Fediverse! …sorry, I’m not adding anything other than cheers here.
Are you using wefwef? That’s the Apollo-like experience…
I believe the name has now changed to Voyager, which might make it easier to search for.
Right along with you figuring things out. It’s far more fun exploring here than feeding R any more data. Sooo much less toxic here than there. Yes, it has some growth ahead of it, but it’ll be a hoot!
What did happen to reddit though? Everything seems to continue as it always has. I was using Joey for Reddit to browse it, ant that still works as far as I know
The impacts on Reddit are going to be more long term than anything. The technically literate base that attracted people to Reddit is gone. Right now, attaching Reddit to the end of a search is a good idea to get the answers you want. All the open source people are gone now, Google results are already hurting. The most attractive part of Reddit is already starting to disappear. It’ll be a slow decline as users can’t find the content they want.
Objectively, Reddit will do well as it’s just a generational change. TikTok and Instagram got all and about zilch to offer if one is looking for factual statements or level-headed discussion of topics and they are doing phenomenally. Instant gratification is way more marketable and exploitable, so it’s best for Reddit to take the small loss in engagement from the technical crowd and be just another meme spewing zombie consumer pleaser.
The people who really suffer are the ones that were relying on the niche knowledge some subreddits provided or who were using them as a learning/studying aid. AKA the folks that left and the lurkers that relied upon them.
In a way it’s a return to form. The technical comminuty side of reddit was just a modern message board. Lemmy will return the power to the communities instead of relying on one company.
2000 upvotes on front page posts is what reddit had in ~2012, 2014 and by that point reddit was already one of my main time wasters
To them 200k users leaving is nothing and they aren’t even all gone, most probably just use both now
But wait 4 years and lemmy might have become a painless viable alternative
They didn’t show a 1-1 Mapping of actual to displayed upvotes
No and they started computing it differently at some point so it got a sudden jump from max 6 to 8k upvotes on the most popular posts to having 13ks in the front page frequently
But I took that into account, my account is 13 years old on there, when stuff barely ever went in the thousands it already made me switch from 9gag to reddit
When I started browsing reddit only the most upvoted post break to thousands. Most just hover around 500s.
Some third party apps still work because the official app isn’t ADA compatible. That being said, most third party apps left are working on monetization to pay for the API, either by ads or subscription. Regardless, all third party apps have been cut off from sexually explicit material.
Very nice
I wonder if we can take the data in that site and see whether or not the fediverse has a “long tail.” Or if the mass migration has consolidated folks into a more traditional bell curve across servers.
The long tail is a concept that applies in a number of ways but I’m most familiar with it from the very very early days of SEO. The idea that the thing you’re interested in (in this case active users) are spread over so many tiny instances that they seem like a small part of the whole when in fact they make up the majority.
Lemmy.world is gone forever for me. 😂 If I sign in, it tells me my log in is wrong. Then I sign on the web, it tells me to enter the 2FA code, I have never set up 2FA. Signed up with another email, kept saying captcha was wrong, then just failed and kept saying user already exists. Tried to log in with the new email that it told me it already existed, then it tells me wrong log in. I just gave up
Edit: this has been very bizarre. Resetting the password sometimes works on the mobile browser only, but not on the desktop. Then now it just never works anymore. I already reset the password once and used it to log in, but on apps it gives an “invalid token” error, on the browser it asks me to enter my 2FA code, but I’ve never set that. When I try to reset the password again, nothing happens [email protected] would you be able to take a look at this for me, please? I don’t know if that’s the right way to mention someone. /u/Ruud
If you reset your password then you can log in
Only after they lend you some money which you will pay back with interest because you are in fact a prince
Nope. That didn’t work on any app. It only worked on the web browser. I did clear the cache and data on those apps, still didn’t work. That include Jerboa
Yes it works only on web browser then you can log in and dissable 2FA
Not anymore :(
Wait, it worked. Wow, took two days. Lol
You need to clear your cookies for Lemmy.world
CTRL-SHIFT-R if you’re not wanting to clear all your cookies (it clears the browser cache and reloads).
It took a little bit, and a few tries, but it worked for me.
It works fine on the browser now after resetting the password, but not on any of the apps period. Tried everything.
On apps, you generally need to log out and back in again, which seemed to work for me.
Don’t trust the app saying that you’re already logged out, try removing the account (if you can), and logging back in again.
When you do a clear cache and data on the app, it wipes the app clean and puts it in a “just installed from the apps store” state. Still didn’t work. Not sure what to do. I’ve already signed up for another instance.
I already did that. Didn’t work
Hey that’s me!
