I seen in a matrix talk on YouTube they are bringing interactive multi user vr to matrix too and it can be end to end encrypted because its built on matrix

DNS is not anonymous. its basically like a phone book, you lookup the name and it gives you a number. That’s it. Your ISP may refuse to give you the number (IP) for a name (address) but thats it. PiHole just gives a local IP for ad domains and gets its requests from other dns servers and caches them locally for a time.

See here for a list of dns providers

Last time I tried it, it was slow enough but it is did the job. Though it depends on the seeds, I suspect it is somewhat faster nowadays.

I2P is the safest way.

Otherwise an open source client such qbittorrent or transmission on an open source os such as Linux with a VPN provider whose privacy policy you are happy with. The most important thing is to bind your torrent client to the VPN interface inside the torrent client settings.

There are more technical setups to automate parts of the process but learn to walk before you can run.

I prefer hotels too. Too many horror stories with airbnb.

Ah I forgot about that. I remember when Micah Lee started that years ago and posted about it on twitter.

I must give it a try and see how it performs. Thanks for the reminder

I think non technical people find the concept of a network within a network confusing. I think its more of i2p itself.

I do think it is the future of filesharing and if I was to create a torrent I’d use i2p. Hopefully with more clients implementing support it sees further adoption.

I second this. It is probably the simplest way to get it working.

I don’t know it depends on the patches really I have automatic updates so I guess a few months would probably be the longest between kernel patches

Personally I DL on a Linux machine and then upload to virus total. If they are clean, then I transfer them to an old android tablet without internet access for reading. If I was reading them on the machine I’d open them in a linux VM, either alpine or fedora silverblue with network aceess disabled.

The state of the art is qubes OS that has a tool to neuter a PDF by taking screenshots and building a new PDF in different VMs.

Yes on PDFs in this case. It is designed to exploit the PDF reader when you open it. Though less common today it’s still an avenue of attack to watch out for. It depends on the reader too but why take a chance if something is detected

I wouldn’t trust it. If you have to get a key then do it in a non networked VM . screenshot the key from the host and then delete the VM.

Be sure to scan them too. I’ve had virus total detect one or two things on different books.

I thought db0 said b64 links were OK. It looks like that changed recently as initially there was b64 links allowed when the server was setup

Only after they lend you some money which you will pay back with interest because you are in fact a prince

I personally use jellyfin and it works well enough for me to watch my movies and shows. I don’t use the app but just use the browser but there are plugins for kodi and various apps too.

Ive not used Plex myself and from what I have read it does the job too. A few friends use it and are happy. I read recently they let go of 20% of their staff.

For me it comes down to it like this: do I want a company to have control over my viewing experience with closed source software or do I want a community FOSS experience under my control. That is very important to me but it depends on your own needs.

Adguard home, jellyfin and miniflux probably see the most use

I support defederating from threads too, I despise FB and anything they touch but blackmailing is not going to do anything in the case of OP and it is the wrong way to go about it . I’m on lemmy.world myself and when the time comes I will have the choice to make depending on what this instance does. We all have that choice, that is the benefit of federation.

This is why we should defederate https://infosec.pub/post/400702

Feel free to do so and run your own server. Blackmailing is childish and non productive by the way. I’m sure most instances will defederate from threads over time but they are looking to federate with mastadon instances more than lemmy/kbin.

Anyway thanks for participating and best of luck.

I think collect evidence and report it. Does the person in question know they are being impersonated ?

Just make a bullshit account with a temp email and say you worked in McDonalds or Starbucks or something. You are right not to give up your data. Well done, 👏

Use duckduckgo’s browser plugin to generate a one time an email alias to point to your real email.

Or simplelogin or mozmail

If you don’t want them getting your IP address proton VPN allows a free tier VPN or you can use tails or tor browser

Good luck

I pin versions and stick to stable releases as I want stability. Everything is behind a VPN so I’m not too worried. I check them and update once a week or so.

I use AGH myself, it runs great and stays out of the way. I have not tried pihole so can’t speak on it

I just use FOSS. I don’t trust that proprietary garbage. I generally don’t pirate software in general. Its far too easy to trojanize it. I also buy games on steam to support linux/deck and valves investment in the ecosystem, I buy them steeply discounted though. With Roms, sales and free games I have a massive backlog so being patient pays off.

I also find that the quality of the FOSS stuff is better and way more configurable. Not hating on anyone that does pirate software or prefers proprietary stuff, to each their own
