I think honestly you couldn’t make people happy
If people hated sigs, you needed restrictions so they didn’t get out of hand
Those restrictions were usually hated by people who liked sigs
and overall it was a distracting feature from the main purpose.
As someone who never liked Facebook…not a particular fan if Zucker wins.
Based on all the comments though, the reason seems to be baked into Mastodon’s design
It seems to be a clash of what two groups of users want since a few seem to be happy with how Mastodon does it.

This seemed obvious the moment they said 10m accounts on launch. People aren’t that proactive
Lemmy was mainly ready for it.
Kbin’s cloudflare on top of the stability issues made it unusable for the first few weeks. Tildes wasn’t an option.
