Is PeerTube’s purpose to replace YouTube?
We can answer with certainty: no!
The ambition remains to be a free and decentralized alternative: the goal of an alternative is not to replace, but to propose something else, with different values, in parallel to what already exists.
They’re saying they’re not a replacement because it’s a decentralized alternative to something centralized. Not because it can’t serve the same needs for technical or economic reasons.
Donations and crowdfunds are the most common suggestions.
Or to come at it from another angle - 38% of the USA’s GDP comes from IP, and its primary beneficiaries are wealthy. If we paid towards a UBI instead of copyright holders, then many people would just make these things for free, with total creative freedom. The messages in our art and direction of our technology would radically change.
If you think this is mentally crippling, you should have experienced the world before the internet! We would believe everything the mainstream news told us and had few realistic alternatives. It was hard to find out if the book you needed was in the library. All information was out of date. Your parents would tell you some misconception and you’d just go ahead thinking that for 20 years.
Being able to instantly find the answer to most questions is very useful.
A good community leaving a bad server can maybe work if the server doesn’t just turn that off.
A bad community that was hosted on a bad server can continue to be blocked on a server level.
A good server tolerating a somewhat bad community will let users continue to block communities.
Two good communities on one server might grow large and want to split servers.
Controversial opinion: spend all of your time on activism and none on unilateral sacrifices that won’t lead to systemic change. You’ve only got so much time, money, willpower, etc.
The “carbon footprint” paradigm is designed to exhaust or discredit those who actually care, so that their political impact will be reduced. The moment one suggests that we fix this global prisoner’s dilemma, they’re labeled a hypocrite by people who don’t understand economics.
They were already killing themselves by running at a loss. Now they’re enshittifying to try and make any profit.
But switching costs were lower than they had hoped, so there’s no profit to be made. Their business model was flawed.
The Boomers were right about (federated) email all along and now the rest of the internet is figuring it out.
I realize this is maybe an excuse but it’s hard to be friends with my neighbors after learning that they wouldn’t wear a mask to save a life.
