Whoa, that’s sexy. What dashboard is that?

That’s a pretty good sign, I’m hoping I can make it work out. The only con so far is the lack of iOS support as of now and questionable smart/android TV support.

I’d actually prefer full CLI/TUI for management, but it’s interesting to see how many different alternatives there are. I only knew about Tailscale going into this.

This seems like a good middleground, I might use it if my stubborn attempt to use Netbird doesn’t work. Thanks!

They have an Android client, and the iOS client is slated to drop Q3 of this year.

Hm, I’ll consider Headscale.

Netbird vs. Tailscale
As I'm prepping my self-hosted setup I wanted to know the community's thoughts on Netbird, the FOSS and completely self hosted alternative to Tailscale. I often hear Tailscale used as a super easy plug and play way to share your home server contents with other people, so how does Netbird fair in comparison? Is it as easy? Is it a more buggy experience, more complicated, or does it just work? Any pros and cons, or niche edge case situations I should know about? Thanks in advance!

It was mainly the search, it was a ghost town for Masto content and accounts. Maye that’s still a WIP, but finding accounts I want to doesn’t seem easy.

Mastodon federation with Akkoma and Pleroma
Hey all! As I've been branching off more and more into the Fediverse I've been looking at Masto alternatives and all of them are great. I like most quite a bit more than Mastodon for the UI and featureset. I want to selfhost one, and Akkoma's lightweight nature and rich features attracted me. Yet for some reason it seems to be impossible to find and follow most Mastodon accounts on these platforms. I've tried various instances, and most of the people I follow just cannot be found. Is there a reason for this I do not know?

I really do feel that stuff like this pointlessly fragments the Fediverse. The magic is that Kbin and Lemmy can interact with no strings attached, doesn’t it make more sense to just have a shared pool of communities irregardless of where they were created? Lemmy and Kbin posts just feed into eachother, I’ve used both platforms. I think it’s pretty beautiful, as someone who’s mostly grown up with the centralized, proprietary web.

I also wish that there was a platform agnostic term for communities, it’d make things a lot easier if they shared a terminology instead of making things more confusing. Though maybe I’m the only one who cares about that.

This seems cool, but damn I wish there was something like this for Steam games or something. That’s the biggest thing I miss from Sony’s ecosystem, and Steam’s “Family Share” is pretty bad in comparison.

This is really an option on Calckey??? I did not expect this use case to be accounted for, let alone supported.

Ah, my bad. I never really looked into it but I kept hearing similar stories, especially when the Meta leak happened.

I honestly forgot about this, there’s also that Blue Sky thing I heard people talk about. I’m very excited to give this a go now.

Is it possible to host a private, defederated, and completely isolated instance for use as your own social media platform?
I want to set up a collaborative writing/socializing platform for my friend group using something like Calckey/Misskey, and just want to know if this is possible. The non Fediverse options all look very lacking, and are meant for corporate/business environments anyway. It really feels like there's not many good and modern options for this sort of thing, but maybe there's better alternatives. Who knows, I'm really new to this scene.

Regardless of the how, I think it’s really cool that the top instance isn’t run by the devs. Really shows off the power and appeal of decentralized services.

Thank you! The only thing I’d want to host is Owncast upon reflection, which I probably won’t be doing until I have a better setup than I do now.

I’m a complete selfhosting beginner. How much is feasible on a single Pi 4B (4 GB RAM)?
Hey! I'm trying to get into self hosting and was wondering what would be possible with a single Pi, at least until I can get more capable hardware. The servies I'm interested in would be things like a pihole, music server, photos server, a few personal fediverse instances (mainly owncast), a small Matrix homeserver for my friends, etc, etc. Media server but that's obviously way into the future I think. While I don't intend or think I can run all of this on one Pi, I just want to know how much is possible. I'm really thankful for any feedback I may get. My apologies for the noobness if I'm completely wrong about all of this. One last thing, any recommendations on any other services I should try out as a beginner? Edit: In hindsight, I really do I wish I asked about the ability of sharing these services with people and how that would affect the load and performance. One of my biggest goals is to have this used by family and close friends.
