Ehh, this is an upload of a document filled with personal info that was intentionally shared. Not a big deal imo, if Lemmings weren’t going to do it, someone else would have.

You were banned for saying “Kill billionaires”.

Not for saying “Luigi Mangione isn’t guilty tho”.

Even if you didn’t mean it as an invitation or incitement to homicide and merely as an answer, completion, or riff to the previous statement, on its own it can be interpreted that way.

I’m rooting for Luigi too, I don’t feel sorry about the death of the UnitedHealthcare CEO, and I do think billionaires shouldn’t get comfortable with profiting from our suffering. But the mods reserve the right to remove stuff they feel could get them in trouble, chances are someone did interpret it this way and made a report (wasn’t me I swear). There may be certain contexts, communities, instances, where this is allowed but you will have to determine that or ask.

I’ll try one more time. The appropriate context to start is from the post. The post is a comic about a MAGA supporter supposedly being forced to act more racist and Nazi-like simply because they are accused of being racist. In the comic the MAGA person is bringing in the topic of Nazism unprompted as the central part of the joke. With that context in mind, do you see that your comment(s) effectively justify or lend legitimacy to what the joke MAGA character is doing?

The parts where you and I are saying the same thing, the primary difference is in the delivery. I’m not an admin or moderator, but if you think moderation is selectively being used against you, you have had another ban a while back with this as a suggestion:

be constructive: there is no need of another internet space full of competition, negativity, rage.

Please try to work on it if you can, and with your help we can bring better quality discussion to this site. Have an excellent day.

I’m sorry but your temp ban from that community imo is justified. The line between shitposting and trolling is quite fine. However sympathy for Neo-Nazism and blaming people who are pointing it out for why they support it is well beyond a reasonable shitpost. The Texit-style remark really is the part that is troll-like if you aren’t serious, and if you are serious you absolutely are falling for Trump and his team’s divisive rhetoric. I’ll attempt to explain.

Not everyone who supports Trump is a Nick Fuentes character, of course. But denying the association is just deluding yourself. In order to establish a tolerant society we mustn’t tolerate intolerance. Pushing racist, misogynist, xenophobic views is not something that can be “heard out”, if you will. The thing is the right-wing media network attaches real problems and struggles that people have, to hating and blaming your neighbour for it. With Nazism that was blaming Jews for various economic and societal problems that Germans had. We must separate the problem from the hate to even discuss a solution, and identifying that to a person is one of the first steps. We cannot start at a position that entertains the hateful argument or association as legitimate, we start from what the problem actually is and that involves calling out and recognizing the hateful parts for what they are. That is why the Democrats are appealing to both progressive-lites, liberals and past Trump voters on the issues, while MAGA is all in on the conspiracy theories, fabricated stories, fear, division and hate-based politics.

Hopefully this helps with understanding a little.

I mean it’s silly ML behaviour, but also it’s surprising to me because davel is usually cool-headed.

Barely a dox if it’s just finding other profiles based on information publicly posted on the profile.

There were some good communities like simpsons shitpost but just way too many trolls on that instance for my liking.

It was recently the anniversary of this drama… where I helpfully provided a Hexbear Simulator.

Well, I don’t feel strongly either way for the specific issue at hand but this is drama llama content for sure!

The cool part of the Fediverse, if this is an issue that fellow vegans can’t see eye to eye on, then we could have two communities, possibly on two instances. One which believes animal welfare means that domesticated animals shouldn’t participate in killing other animals, viewing it as unecessary and cruel, and the other community that doesn’t and only considers human nutrition choices, with the view that forcing change in domesticated animals’ diets as unnatural and cruel.

Like it or not, each server’s admins determine the shape of discussion and can make the final decisions on some items of discourse in situations like this, call it carnist, tankie, whatever pejorative of choosing. The recourse is to move elsewhere.

As a small plus, the crazy ones you wouldn’t want to hang around with will self-select and block you, like in this case, instead of banning from the whole site as would happen in Reddit.

The first linked thread was just one user getting pissy in the comments.

The second thread was flamebait, plain and simple. Has no business being in Lemmy Be Wholesome. On Shitpost I could give it a pass, maybe.

It’s already too late, but I would suggest in this case not using this thread as an extension to continue back and forth the argument highlighted in this drama.

db0 has been all-in on using AI for announcement banner artwork, moderation, csam protection (Overseer) and this and that since last summer. I think these are useful and good ways to apply AI. It takes out a lot of the gritty labour that would need to otherwise be done by unpaid volunteers anyway.

Dunno why people are fussing about it. I mean sure, stealing art might be more in spirit with the piracy community but it a daily rotating banner seems so benign that it could be just as easy to ignore.

I’m conflicted here. The format of the question belongs to something more like [email protected] or [email protected]. At the same time since from this text you appear to crave drama so it kind of belongs here.

I’ll warn you in advance, going into right-wing spaces for the sole purpose of causing drama isn’t going to fix your reputation in any left or right online space that isn’t looking for flaming and trolling.

Hexbear.net might be more your vibe… not federated with Lemmy.ca because at least several months ago their ChapoTrapHouse was full of users that wanted to ‘troll the libs’ and stir up shit.

You are correct, and therefore there shouldn’t be freedom of speech for the sake of it in any social media platform worth going to. “Free speech” ignores the values of respect, ettiquite and gives plenty of room for trolls and flamebaiters to play games with moderators. Seems like a nightmare for a server operator to manage.

To have a place where people can have level-headed discussion about topics including controversial ones, certain ground rules need to be set, which inherently are limits to speech. If you don’t like the rules or how they are enforced, the freedom that you have in Lemmy/the Fediverse is to move to another server in line with what you think are better rules/rulers, or for you to bother with the moderation work yourself in your own community on your own server where no one tells you what to do.

You sure it’s not just because those comments were submitted by ani.social users during the period which the instances were defederated from each other?

Well I am glad we aren’t associated with lemmygrad which is where this user appears to hail from.

You pose a good question. Here are a couple reasons:

  • Rust is hard language for people to develop with.
  • There are problems extending beyond moderation that need addressing, such as database management, as admin alyaza put it:

The problems with databases are almost too numerous to talk about and even Lemmy’s most ardent supporters recognize this as the biggest issue with the software currently.

Yeah. I mean it’s a topic that will affect a lot of people, but the changes are likely months away. Beehaw doesn’t have a platform to switch to overnight anyway, it would need some work.

That said it’s good to get this conversation out in the open early as to hopefully spur Lemmy development to address issues we’re running into and help improve the Fediverse model overall.

Though I haven’t confirmed it (nor would I want to at this point), from my recollection of events, some community from burggit.moe was allegedly the source instance of the problematic images that were thought to have taken vlemmy.net down, which was reportedly some sexual depiction of young fictional cartoon/animal characters. This might not be illegal in some places but it definitely is in Ireland, so the server owner was notified as such and had most of their online accounts removed.

My Fedilore+drama post on it

Here’s some things Beehaw admind have been asking for from moderation since June: https://beehaw.org/comment/397674

See github issues #3255 and #3275

Honestly, I think it was destined to happen one way or another because of an open-signups server getting so big. The burggit/vlemmy debacle was the warning shot.

It should jump-start overdue efforts to improve moderation granularity and make it easier for mods to manage users and content.

When rice/ricing is used in Linux customization, it has nothing to do with the Japanese, Asians, or their cars.

I can see issue if ricing a desktop environment meant “made it look like it was from Asia” or “filled excessively with anime (or other asian thing)” kind of stereotype, but it’s not. There is no association with the pejorative meaning, so no problem.

Why are people squabbling over this? This is so silly. Use ricing, don’t use it, call it something else, I don’t give a shit.

Seeing the “pig poop balls” emoji twice was enough for me to say good riddance to the fools on Hexbear off of lemmy.ca

It’s unfortunate because I did see some interesting communities on hexbear that weren’t filled to the brim with CTH rhetoric. It seemed there was a mixed bag, some users wanting to just politely present themselves while others (a minority of users but not always minority of comments) were set on sowing chaos and cajoling Lemmy users for their own entertainment.

I’ve been surprisingly insulated from it for a while. I first came across a hexbear thread on [All] maybe a couple days ago.

On their own threads, Hexbear users half appear to just enjoy spreading anti-Western, pro-Xi and pro-Putin views, another half like to laugh at the people they consider “libs”. A third half just seem interested in inciting chaos.

So long as they keep their Lemmy rule-breaking silliness to their own instance communities like CTH, I’m fine with it. It makes me chuckle. If they start pouring out and posting communism-flavoured wojaks outside of an appropriate context on Lemmy’s threadiverse, we don’t need them here.

There are some communities on there that are more toned down and friendly. Idk if CTH is always like it is or if they are on overdrive because of the “excitement” of joining Lemmy.

I might join blahaj lemmy at some point then. The LemmyNSFW instance takes up an annoying amount of my All page, even though I’ve blocked many communities.

I was hoping for some non-porn NSFW stuff on that instance, like military combat footage, OSHA failures with terrible results, scenes of homicides and violent crime, strange nature photos (but stuff other than animal sex). It’s not that I like gore in particular but I thought lemmynsfw would be a spot that could host that sort of content, which isn’t appropriate to host on most other instances. But nope, it’s pretty much all porn that’s on there.

lemmy.blahaj.zone determines the rules of conduct. They have determined that “Just Asking Questions” to push anti-trans views and other types of masked, subtle transphobia is not tolerated in this space.

💀Nyeeh heheheheheeeeh!💀

The fact we’re on the first screen of results is progress! 🎉

I’m begging for you, don’t repost my meme.

Well, it would best to compare apples to apples, there are 8M total Mastodon accounts to 108M Threads accounts.

For active users if we assume the same active ratio (probably not, but I couldn’t find any data for Threads on that from a 1 minute search), then it would be 2 million to 27 million, which is small but it wouldn’t “completely” drown out Mastodon.

I had almost 40k comment karma and a couple hundred post karma on Reddit…

It never mattered to me.

My policy is this:

  • Agree/Like/Interested = upvote
  • Disagree/Not interested = no vote
  • Stupid/Off-topic/Troll/Bait = downvote.

Exactly, they fuss about blue or green text bubbles, well mine are yellow, deal with it 😎.

Yeah… that’s a story for another Fedidrama post LOL

Ambitious! I like it. Well I don’t know all about you, so here’s what I suggest:

Write down what it is you really want (privately), because “I want more” is very broad and not a need that can easily be satisfied.

  • Do you want to be famous such that many people who you’ve never met would know your name?
  • Do you want to be rich and powerful so that you can retire early and have stuff taken care for you?
  • Do you want to be a small part of developing a big invention that benefits the whole world?
  • Do you want to help people in any way you can even if it meant sacrifices to yourself?
  • Do you want to become knowledgeable in an area where only a few hundred people have a true understanding of the latest advancements?
  • Do you want to travel to every corner of the world, or further into space?
  • Do you want to live your life in a way that will help bring a more livable world for future generations?

Each of these all will require some levels of dedication, effort, resolve, money and luck. Figure out what it is you want and to what level, figure out what are the challenges keeping you from it (money, time, knowledge, luck, connections, physical/mental complications, what have you), then figure out how to best deal with these challenges to get to your goal.

VLemmy .net’s defederation and disappearance
Note: It would be best not to visit the instance for the time being until the issue is resolved. At some point in the last 24-48 hours (approx. July 7-8, 2023) the instance `vlemmy.net` went down without a clear explanation, and at certain times redirected to a parked domain. This comes after a notice from vlemmy admin pyarra announcing it was forced to de-federate with another instance due to content that is considered CSAM under Irish law ([link to legal definition](http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1998/act/22/section/2/enacted/en/html#sec2)) syncing with vlemmy, hosted in Ireland. The original post link disappeared with the server but [here is a link to a cached version from lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/post/1148656). There is no official confirmation whether there is any connection between this event and its disappearance. [This post on [email protected]](https://feddit.nl/post/458654) has a screenshot of the redirected domain name. [An investigation by a user on [email protected] is underway](https://lemmy.world/post/1232070)... their findings were as follows: * [Information from 1AM EST Jul 9th] vlemmy is still “up” and intermittently accessible. It is running "slow as hell" * Stripe, Librepay, and Github accounts are all closed. Closure date unknown * Reddit account still exists and has been messaged * No mentions of the instance in Element.io chats but still searching * They have almost certainly NOT lost their domain. Who.is historical records show no ownership or nameserver changes. * The user updated the post stating "I’m working through about 40 different potential leads right now" * The user is requesting help from the community finding an image from the kerbalspaceprogram community on vlemmy potentially left in someone's browser cache. *Please be careful in ensuring content on lemmy.ca follows the site rules and Canadian law, so as not to get this wonderful server in trouble either!*

Lemmy instance admin concerned about decision to remove CAPTCHA amid spam waves
Big Drama Llamas... User [@[email protected]](https://tucson.social/u/th3raid0r) posted a call to pressure the devs to return CAPTCHA support before v.0.18 arrives on the community [[email protected]](https://beehaw.org/c/technology). Mixed response from users and beehaw admins. [Lemmy issue #2922](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2922) is where it was removed 2 weeks ago due to its effectiveness being limited, [Lemmy issue #3200](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3200) is the issue where it is suggested to have it return. Repo maintainers are somewhat perceptive to reverting it but would be more willing to accept a full implementation of graphical CAPTCHA over the previous version. Alternative links: https://lemmy.ca/post/793011, https://beehaw.org/post/667199. (Note that if you view from a defed instance with Beehaw you will only see a handful of comments). Discussion welcome here.
